Things From Another World , a Portland area comic store chain, hosted a ladies night event on June 7. This women-only event is held by TFAW annually but was the first time I attended. In addition to having refreshments and drinks – what would a Portland event be without wine and beer? – they held a panel with prominent comic creators, a t-shirt craft, and an area to “drink and draw.”
Q&A was held with Joëlle Jones (Helheim), Rachel Edidin (Wired.com), Dylan Meconis (Out Foxed), and Leia Weathington (The Legend of Bold Riley). The panel was interesting despite my lack of knowledge regarding comics. I recognized two of the women from the local Nerd Fight podcast, and during the panel I discovered Rachel Edidin wrote about taking back the “idiot nerd girl” meme. It’s exciting when something awesome from the Internet is so close to home!
Topics discussed included sexism in the comics industry, why women are so hard on ourselves in regards to our own creations, dealing with non-nerd parents/family, and the pros and cons of working in an industry where you can wake up at 11AM and drink on the job! It was both informative and entertaining.
I was expecting it to be similar to a book signing event where you buy the author’s book to support the author and venue, but they were sold out of the panelists works. I’ll have to remember to look into their comics but I’m afraid I’ll forget. I suggest that next time TFAW make it convenient and easy to support the speakers by purchasing their comics.
Overall it was a fun event. Even though I’m practically inseparable from my husband, it created a safe space for women to ask questions we may not have asked with men around. Portland is an awesome place to be a geek. Thanks to TFAW for a memorable night!
